Leading through the Lens of Polarity Thinking
While some issues are problems with a definite answer, the more challenging issues are polarities — situations in which either side has benefits and drawbacks. Attempting to address these issues with traditional problem-solving skills only makes things worse.
There is a significant, competitive advantage for an educational leader who can distinguish between a problem to solve and a polarity to manage and is effective with both. In this session, we will explore Polarity Thinking and how leaders can use this lens to effectively manage individual, team or organizational challenges. We will also engage with a mapping tool designed to help an individual think through ideas within various polarity. When used successfully, it helps identify the upsides and downsides of each pole, resulting in a whole picture of the polarity to be managed. This tool can be used with individuals and teams moving forward. Get ready to see the world in polarities!

Leadership as Design
Headship is changing. With a shifting educational market and the emergence of new pedagogies, independent schools have new opportunities - and new imperatives - to innovate. Heads need to manage this process of innovation while managing the day-to-day and staying true to the mission. One way to manage this process is to view leadership as design. In short, heads can lead innovation by thinking like designers in small moments, making choices that open up big opportunities. Speaking from his “insider” experience as a head as well as his “outsider” experience consulting with heads and schools, Bamford will build excitement about the ways heads can identify new opportunities, build cultures of creativity, and rethink the future of the schools they steward.
Presenter: Greg Bamford, Outgoing Head of School, Watershed School; Incoming Associate Head of School for Strategy and Innovation, Charles Wright Academy; Co-Founder, Leadership+Design
