Hopes and Fears: Working with Today's Independent School Parents

For years now, independent school educators have been reporting that parents are more challenging to work with. They are more anxious about their children and more consumerist in their approach to the school. In this workshop, drawing on their new book, Hopes and Fears: Working with Today’s Independent School Parents, Rob Evans and Michael Thompson outline the causes and consequences of these changes and offer practical ways teachers and administrators can hold their ground and strengthen their relationships with parents.

Rob and Michael are both psychologists, former teachers, former child and family therapists, and longtime school consultants. They’ve each worked in more than 700 independent schools. Michael is the author of nine other books, including Raising Cain, and Rob of three others, including Seven Secrets of The Savvy School Leader.

Rob Evans is a psychologist and school consultant. A former high school and pre-school teacher, and a former child and family therapist, he has worked with schools and families for nearly fifty years and has consulted to more than 1,700 schools across the U.S. and internationally, including more than 700 independent schools. His interests have centered on crisis intervention; on the challenges of leading innovation; on changes in American families and their impact on schools; and on improving collegial candor among educators. He also offers strategic thinking workshops for Boards.

Rob is the author of many articles. His books include The Human Side of School Change and Seven Secrets of The Savvy School Leader. His new book is Hopes and Fears: Working with Today’s Independent School Parents, co-written with Michael Thompson.

Michael Thompson, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist, author and school consultant. He has worked in schools for fifty years, starting out as a middle school teacher, later training as a counselor and psychologist. He is presently the supervising psychologist for the Belmont Hill School in Belmont, MA and has worked in over 700 schools in the U.S., Asia, Africa Europe and Central America.

Dr. Thompson is the author or coauthor of ten books, including the New York Times bestseller Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys, Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children, The Pressured Child and Homesick and Happy: How Time Away from Parents Can Help a Child Grow. His latest book, written with his colleague, Rob Evans, and published by NAIS is Hopes and Fears: Working with Today’s Independent School Parent.

Dr. Thompson was the facilitator for the NAIS Institute for New Heads from 1992 through 2001 and subsequently served in the same role for the Academy of International School Heads from 2002-2016. He has been honored with the Hedley S. Dimock Award by the American Camp Association for his contributions to camping.
