Tap Dancing on Marbles: Driving Organizational Stewardship from the Business Office

Finance professionals often struggle to have their voices carry appropriate weight among school leaders and the Board of Trustees beyond just the numbers they present. The most accomplished business officers know how to be both a team member and leader within the organization, and are adept at using multiple leadership strategies to be successful. Working in collaboration with different stakeholders, the CFO/Business Manager is often asked to ensure financial stewardship with incomplete data, high variability, and exacting expectations. For many, these moments feel like tap dancing on marbles.

This interactive session will unpack three key tools in the leadership toolbox: managing up, organizational savvy, and change management. At the core of this work is facilitating mission-driven, data-informed decision making. We will explore how to practically apply these concepts through the use of case studies, and both small and large group discussions. Participants are asked to arrive at the session having identified one significant project or challenge that requires leveraging these tools to make progress in the weeks or months ahead.

Anne-Marie Balzano, EdD
Senior Governance Strategist
Mission & Data

Dr. Anne-Marie Balzano is Mission and Data's Senior Governance Strategist. In her role, she designs learning opportunities for heads of school and boards and leads Mission and Data's Board Chair Support Program. A former teacher, head of school, associate professor, and most recently, Director of Leadership and Governance at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), she possesses a unique and multi-leveled perspective of the educational landscape and the complex demands of supporting leadership and governance development across multiple contexts. Dr. Balzano is a trusted advisor to schools across the country, facilitating board retreats and educating boards of trustees on effective governance practices and trends, supporting resiliency in heads of school, and building a positive board culture. Independent school trustees and heads of school know Dr. Balzano as the chief editor of The Board Chair Handbook and the host of NAIS’s governance podcast, The Trustee Table.

Ari Betof, EdD, MBA

Ari Betof, EdD, MBA is co-founder and partner of Mission & Data. He is a nationally recognized expert in independent school financial sustainability and organizational stewardship. Ari has served as an independent school trustee, head of school, director of institutional advancement, director of enrollment management, director of strategic planning, and faculty member. He has been an instructor in University of Pennsylvania’s PennGSE Mid-Career Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership and Leadership Master’s Program. He has served as a mentor in Harvard University’s School Leadership Program and faculty member in the NAIS School Leadership Institute. Ari earned his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on financial and organizational sustainability and MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management where he was an Emerging Markets Institute Fellow.
