Deborah Helsing, Ed.D.
Co-Director, Minds at Work;
Lecturer, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Deborah Helsing, Ed.D., is Co-Director of Minds at Work, where she coaches, consults and provides training on the Immunity to Change approach. Deb designs leadership development programs and learning experiences that are “deliberately developmental,” going beyond technical or informational approaches to engage transformational or adaptive learning and change.

She also holds a faculty position at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, teaching courses in Adult Development, Immunity to Change, and co-teaching a course in personal mastery for leaders. She provides executive coaching to high potential educational leaders as part of the Doctor of Educational Leadership program.

Deb has co-authored several articles and books, including: An Everyone Culture: Becoming a Deliberately Developmental Organization (2016, with Robert Kegan, Lisa Lahey, Andy Fleming, and Matt Miller) winner
of an 800-CEO-Read Business Book Award; Right Weight, Right Mind: The ITC Approach to Permanent Weight Loss (2014, with Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey); The Immunity to Change Coach’s Guide (2011, with Lisa Lahey and Robert Kegan).

National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS)

Anne Marie Balzano, Ed.D., is the Director of Leadership and Governance at NAIS. In this role, she designs and implements learning opportunities for school leaders and trustees and conducts research on issues facing independent schools. She hosts the NAIS Trustee Table podcast and recently worked on the NAIS board chair handbook. She is now leading a research project with the University of Pennsylvania on factors affecting head of school turnover. Anne-Marie is a former head of school, public school administrator, and professor who has delivered numerous presentations on building leadership capacity across teams, managing school change, and effective leadership practice.

Leading Change: Diagnosing and Overturning the Immunity-to-Change
Why is change so difficult, even when we are genuinely committed to it? What can we do to increase our ability to overcome our current challenges? Many, if not most, of the biggest challenges individuals and organizations face are what is known as adaptive challenges. We can’t solve adaptive challenges just by learning new skills or information. Instead, these challenges require us to find new means of learning. They require shifts in our mindsets.

In this highly interactive, experiential workshop, participants will engage in a personal learning process for addressing their own high priority improvement goals. They will uncover the adaptive dimensions of their challenges and explore strategies for how to develop new capacities and mindset shifts that will prepare them to address their challenges, and those of their organization, more effectively.

Participants will:
• Gain a powerful picture of the psychological forces that undermine our efforts to change
• Identify assumptions that interfere with their ability to address their challenges
• Learn how to disrupt the immunity to change and create new possibilities for making progress on their
goal
• Explore the implications for leading others through major change initiatives

Building a Sustainable Leadership Practice – What Every Head Needs to Know
In this interactive workshop, we will examine the current landscape of independent school leadership utilizing trends from recent research including the NAIS 2018 governance study, the study on head of school turnover and the factors that affect tenure, as well as the implications for leadership sustainability. In addition, participants will explore their own leadership strengths in relation to the three prominent frameworks of transformational, instructional, and distributive leadership. Finally, participants will design professional growth plans to sustain their own leadership practice and recommit to their leadership vision.

Once the room block is sold out, there may not be rooms available at this group rate.

Registration and Hotel Deadline: May 14, 2020
To receive the FCIS group rate at the resort, reservations must be made by this date.

Cancellation & Refunds: All hotel cancellations must be made directly through the hotel and in accordance with hotel policy. Workshop refund requests must be made in writing and emailed to kdanger@fcis.org. There is a $50 per person processing fee through May 7, 2020, with no refunds after this date.
