Executive Director

Dr. Barbara Hodges began her tenure as Executive Director of FCIS on July 1, 2010.  Before assuming her FCIS duties, Barbara served as Head of School at Holy Comforter Episcopal School for 17 years in Tallahassee and President of the FCIS Board of Directors.  Her prior experience includes serving as a Curriculum Development Specialist and teacher in North Carolina, and teaching at schools in both Virginia and Florida.  Her related professional experiences include serving on the Board of Regents of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida, the Board of Directors of the Florida Association of Academic Non-public Schools (FAANS), the Florida Council of Independent Schools and the North Carolina Association of Educators.  In 2009, she was named to the NAIS Commission on Accreditation.  Dr. Hodges has identified her vision for FCIS “to be a premier independent school association with a strategic board, proactive legislative advocates, and a streamlined quality accreditation process that provides outstanding members services, while utilizing strong communication, up-to-date technology, and marketing to operate with efficiency and professional excellence.” 

Associate Director for Accreditation

Karen Mathews joined the FCIS Staff in the summer of 2008.  As Associate Director for Accreditation, Karen oversees all aspects of the FCIS and FKC accreditation process.  Prior to this position, Karen served as Principal of Wellington School in St. Petersburg and spent 21 years as a teacher, coach and administrator at The Canterbury School of Florida.  While at both schools, Karen served as a Chair for the FCIS Steering Committee and served on numerous evaluation teams.  Karen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College in Hispanic Studies and a Master's Degree in Spanish from the University of South Florida.   Borrowing a quote from Robert Egley, Head of School at Glades Day School, she sees her mission at FCIS as helping "sustain educational environments where others can do great things".


Administrative Assistant/Certification Specialist

Keara Danger joined the staff at FCIS in February 2003 to assist in the office.  She is now responsible for handling master inservice, certification, accounting and all publications as well as other administrative duties.   Keara graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.  After working in the business world for 10 years and being a stay-at-home mom for three, she embarked on her career in education which was always one of her passions.  Keara enjoys traveling with her husband Steve and 10 year old son Colin.


Events Coordinator  

Carol Lee Curtis joined FCIS in 1999 as the Events Coordinator, overseeing the annual conference, workshops and retreats.  Prior to this, she spent fourteen years of service at St. Thomas Episcopal School in Coral Gables, FL, where she was the Assistant Head and Head of School.  During those years, she served as an Executive Board Member of the Episcopal Diocesan School Board, Diocese of SouthEast Florida and was a member of many FCIS accreditation teams.  Prior to her years in independent education, she was a classroom teacher and Reading Resource Teacher for Dade County Public Schools.  Carol Lee received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Miami, and a Master's of Science degree from Nova University.  While living in Miami, she was a member of the South Florida Center for Executive Educators, the Dade County Reading Council and Delta Kappa Gamma. 


Technology Coordinator/ Marketing Specialist

Tam Nguyen joined FCIS in July 1998, after graduating from the University of South Florida where she studied business and information technology.  As the web site and database specialist, Tam oversees all technology and communications.  She is also the FCIS convention vendor and corporate sponsor coordinator.  Tam enjoys running, racquet ball and spending time with her family.
